A Qualitative Study on the Structure and Process of Self-Determination Experience of People with Mental Disorder

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to understand the structure and process of the mentally ill¡¯s experiences of self-determination and therefore to develope the substantive theory for those experience, which is helpful in establishing the foundation to promote the client¡¯s self-determination-oriented social work practice. Main research question carried out in this study is that "how the clients¡¯ experiences of self-determination in the field of mental health profession". Considering the features of subject matter of the study, the client¡¯ lived experience, grounded theory, as main research methodology, developed by Strauss and Corbin is employed. Data obtained by in depth interview with 17 mentally-ill are analyzed and categorized into 15 higher level of concepts and constructs underlying those experiences. The results of the study shows that the process of self-determination experienced by clients are summarized as a series of stigma, deprivation, opportunity and experience and subjectification. Out of process by using the paradigm models, the 3 distinctive types emerged, which can classify client¡¯s experience of self-determination: subject-type, dependent type, complaint type. In sum, the study can verifies clearly that most of clients have strong desire and needs for self-determination and can be empowered successfully through the experience of self-determination. In addition, such results can provides the important implication to social workers attitude and roles which could guide the social workers practice directed into promoting client¡¯s self-determination.
